Extended Sessions

Extended sessions are sessions that last longer than the usual 50-minute breakouts. Pre-registration is required but there is no additional fee. You can add these sessions to your registration using the “view/modify registration” link in your original confirmation email starting at noon CT on April 4 (the day after early-bird registration closes). Registration for these sessions ends April 12.

These sessions are available only for students (unless otherwise noted) and there is a limit of three students from the same school per session.


InDesign Tricks: Work Smarter, Not Harder (2 hours)
In this hands-on session, participants will learn how to set up InDesign files as templates, and how to use the many features available more easily and efficiently. This session is about making InDesign work better and easier for your staff.

Photojournalism Basics (2 hours)
In this two-hour session, we’ll learn the basics of ethical photojournalism. We’ll learn how to use our cameras, compose great storytelling photos and use Photoshop, ethically, to enhance the photos not fake the photos. Students should bring their cameras.

Surviving in a Fake News World (3 hours)
Enraged by fake news and its tarnish on good journalism? Explore the complexities of how information is created, spread and consumed. Hone your skills in identifying fake and unfair content, getting the facts right, and detecting bias – both your own and others.

Yearbook Jump-Start: 2019-2020 Planning (2 hours)
Editors/leaders for the 2019-2020 yearbook plan to attend this two-hour session to get a jump start on the new book. We’ll talk theme development, leadership and team building and have plenty of hands-on activities so please plan to stay for the entire two-hour session.

Telling Human Stories (3 hours)
What can we do that someone else is not? We can tell unique human stories that help build empathy and inclusion on our campus. We can apply this to all storytelling to add heart. Session includes time to go out and practice the art.

Using Illustrator to Enhance Your Publication (2 hours)
Participants will learn about guides and artboards and how they can help you organize and design better. Then participants will learn how to create custom shapes easily, how to make 3D objects, and how to use brush tool for special
effects.

Media Literacy in Practice (3 hours)
Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create and act using all forms of communication. In today’s digital world, media literacy skills are of utmost importance. Schools face challenges in the ever-growing information landscape. What skills do educators need to teach their students to become active and engaged citizens? How can students use their voice and their tech savvy to contribute to their community — online and off?

Join the National Association for Media Literacy Education and partners for a three-hour interactive workshop exploring methods of media literacy skill building for both teachers and students.

Advisers: Don’t Be a Lone Wolf, Join a Pack (2 hours)
Are you a new(ish) adviser and you’re looking for some available resources or questions to be answered? Attend this session to learn some tips and tricks from a veteran adviser and locations of various available resources. Advising doesn’t have to be so lonely, so come check out a support system and make some friends. The first hour will feature teaching strategies to address grading, deadlines, staff structures, etc. The second hour will provide opportunities to get answers to questions, work collaboratively, swap ideas and give you structured time to begin addressing some of your biggest concerns or areas of help.

Lightroom for Beginners (2 hours)
New to Lightroom? This session will cover how to use all the tools in Lightroom, from uploading a photo to exporting it for use in your publication, and everything in between.

Better Interviews, Better Stories (3 hours)
In this three-hour, workshop-style session, students will experience the interviewing process from start to finish. They will learn how to find great sources, develop lists of quality questions, listen for storytelling quotes and eventually incorporate all of those elements into great stories.

DSLR Camera Boot Camp (3 hours)
This completely hands-on session requires only that you bring a camera (with a charged battery and empty memory card) and your willingness to learn. We will explore the basics of your camera — from ISO to aperture to shutter speed and more. You will never put your camera on Auto setting again. We also will study the role available light plays. Bring your users manual if you have it.
